White Colne Village Hall & Parish Council
A full energy upgrade timed with a roof replacement, cutting costs and modernising the building for the whole community
White Colne Parish Council approached Simcott Renewables with a clear challenge: the village hall needed a full energy upgrade to cut running costs and modernise an ageing heating system. The hall's roof was also due for replacement, so rather than treating these as separate jobs, we worked with the council to design a single plan that made the most of the opportunity.
Located in White Colne, Essex, the village hall is a well-used community space, and the council wanted an upgrade that would deliver a genuine, lasting reduction in bills without disrupting how the hall is used day to day.
An ageing roof and rising running costs
The village hall's roof was approaching the end of its life and due for replacement regardless of any energy upgrade. At the same time, the building's heating system was outdated and increasingly expensive to run, and the Parish Council was keen to reduce the hall's environmental impact alongside its running costs.
Timing a roof replacement and a solar installation separately would have meant paying for scaffolding and access twice, and installing solar on a roof that would need to be lifted again in a few years made little sense. The council needed a plan that combined both jobs efficiently, without compromising on the quality of either.

A combined roof, solar, battery, and heat pump upgrade
We designed a single, coordinated project that addressed the roof, the electricity supply, and the heating system together. By choosing an in-roof solar system rather than a standard on-roof mount, we were able to save the parish a significant amount of money on the roof replacement itself, while giving the building a modern, seamless look with no visible mounting hardware.
Over the course of the project, we installed 30 in-roof solar panels integrated directly with the new roof, alongside a 10kW inverter and a 20kWh Fox ESS battery to maximise self-consumption. We also added an EV charger with payment software, allowing the hall to support electric vehicle charging for visitors and the wider community. Finally, we replaced the outdated heating system with a new air source heat pump, and helped the council secure a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to reduce the cost of that part of the project.

Performance and Results
The Parish has already noticed a significant drop in energy bills and heating costs, freeing up funds that can now be directed toward other community uses rather than utility costs.
The Parish is also planning to join the Simcott Energy Aggregation Club, which will allow the hall to generate additional revenue from its system by trading energy collectively alongside other members.
Why This Project Matters
This project shows the value of planning an energy upgrade around a building's natural maintenance cycle rather than treating solar, heating, and roofing as separate decisions. Timing the in-roof solar installation with the roof replacement avoided duplicated scaffolding and access costs, and delivered a cleaner, more integrated result than a standard retrofit would have.
It also reflects a growing pattern of community-focused installations for Simcott Renewables, including work for Stevington Village Hall, Melrose Community Association, Our Lady and St Nicholas Church in Liverpool, Harrold Centre in Bedford, and Merstham Community Hub in Surrey. Village halls and parish-run buildings are often run on tight budgets with committee oversight, and projects like this demonstrate that a well-planned energy upgrade can deliver real savings without requiring the community to compromise on how the building is used.
Client Feedback
The Parish Council has been delighted with the outcome, telling us how the savings are already being felt and how the project has given the hall "a new lease of life."

Planning an energy upgrade for your village hall or community building?
If you are responsible for a village hall, parish-run building, or community space and are exploring an energy upgrade, the most valuable first step is looking at your roof and heating system together rather than in isolation, especially if a roof replacement is already on the horizon.
At Simcott Renewables, we design and install home solar panels, battery storage, and heat pump systems for community buildings across Essex and the wider UK, coordinating each element so the project works as a whole rather than a series of separate jobs.
We provide:
- Combined roof and solar planning to avoid duplicated access costs
- In-roof solar systems for a clean, integrated finish
- Battery storage and EV charging for community and visitor use
- Support securing grants such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
- Access to our Energy Aggregation Club for ongoing revenue generation
